Letters to the Library 2022 Love and Break Up Letters

During the month of February, we asked you to write us and let the Library know how your on-going relationship with us is going. Many thanks to all who participated in this virtual adaptation of our annual February event! Please enjoy reading the heartfelt letters we received.

This year, Library staff created a love song playlist and a break-up song playlist to spark inspiration.

ADA-Compliant Text: Dear BioMed, Thank you for being the quiet study space and having the relaxed architecture style that you do. You've offered us so so much that others *cough* Geisel *cough* can never match. You have well spaced-out desks, portable chargers at the entrance, and a blissfully calm nature no matter what time of the quarter it is. Let's be frank - the fact that you also have study rooms that can form an even larger room is just so you. I do wish you didn't have to call in security to kick us out when we work in the study rooms near closing time, but I understand that you are a strong and independent library with your own ways and rules. Thank you for being you, and staying open for most of the ups and downs of this past year. Sincerely, Alexander

Note: The former Biomedical Library Building has been renamed Sally T. WongAvery Library.

Winning Break Up Letter

ADA-Compliant Text: I’m so sorry Library… it’s not you, it’s me… well no it’s definitely you. You’re so enticing, gorgeous, full of intellect and quiet! But I think I need someone I can have a conversation with! Your heart is full, and so is your favorite floor of mine.. just when I need you. I need someone stable! Consistent! But your lack of space for me has left a hole as gaping as your third floor. I appreciate all you’ve done for me, but this is my final goodbye. I’ll keep you deeper in my heart than your own basement, but I have to let you go. Forever in my heart, till commencement do us part, Kimberly

Love Letter: An Encore of the Ode to Geisel / It is me Geisel, I am back with another ode to you. / I wonder if you will recognize me amongst all your other admirers. / I am in love with you through and through. / I am graduating this coming summer after all these years. / Look what has happened, the distance between us has been erased. / Now I have a place where I belong away from home. / When I heard you were open again to a librarian I raced. / Searching for books, through your corridors I am now free to roam. / Sitting with my friends in 1 West makes my brain become bright. / There are masks and important protocols in the internal space. / I see the moonlight peeking through your windows at night. / Everything is worth it if I can see your lovely place. / My love for you has consumed me and made me more clever. / I am yours and you are mine, always and forever. - Qareena, Dearest Geisel, I can not tell you how happy I am now that you have reopened. I wish you nothing but the best. Your staff is doing a great job and is so friendly and helpful. P.S. Yes, I am the same person who wrote the original Ode to Geisel.

Love Letter: Anytime I’m feeling lonely or down, you’re there for me and take away my frown. When I’m overwhelmed with all of my work, you create a comfortable space for me to so that I don’t go berserk. When I’m walking alone in the dark, you light the way for me and cause a spark in my heart. Your beauty always has me in awe, as I appreciate your structural geometry that contains no flaw. There truly is no better friend than you, I…I love you. Sincerely, Anonymous

Love Letter: Dear Geisel Library <3, thank you for offering a space for students to study and having study rooms available. From early mornings to late nights, you have been there for me. Our future is bright and I can't wait for Audrey's to open again in the future. Love, A Tired Student

Break Up Letter: Dear Geisel, I didn't want to end things this way, but I can't go on any longer. You have not helped me do any of my assignments. When I try to hang out with you my Wi-fi never works, but it seems to work for everyone else... It just appears that you don't want to be in this relationship as much as I do. Plus, the no eating rule is sort of a deal breaker for me... I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner but studying without food just seems wrong. I hope you understand. Thank you for the times we have spent together when I was in SI. I wish I added more value to your life, but I just think we're not meant to be. I wish you the best. Kindly, Raina

Love Letter: Dear Geisel, how my heart yearns to explore your grand interior every time I pass by your pristine windowed walls. You hold a story of great histories, tantalizing and charming. I have yet to know you for who you are inside, but I am captivated by your beauty, planning how I will go about navigating what you have to offer. The only guy I will ever love, Geisel. Sincerely, Anonymous

Love Letter: I love that the library is always a place that feels open and comfortable to study between classes, or maybe a last minute place to cram before a big test. With different levels of white noise it makes it a great place to focus with either the bustle of the 1st floor, or a more focused silence in the upper floors. Honestly speaking I found the library intimidating in my 1st year, but after entering it for the 1st time I found it a great resource that is in a very good spot on campus! Sincerely, Anonymous

Love Letter: My Baby G, I just wanna express how much I missed you this past year babe. We've been doing this long distance-ship for so long, and it's the most relieving to be with you in person again 😉. I love the snacks you give me from Audrey's Cafe, the quiet spaces you allow me to study in, and the 24/7 support you bring me from the overnight study rooms. You've been there to watch me grow and learn, and I hope you'll continue to be there with me again and again 😘 Best, Your Boo <3

Break Up Letter: I think there could be another coffee place in Geisel or at least another food place as well as a bigger area to eat food and do work! It would also be great to have a nice seating arrangement with standing desks as well as a lounge section to take power naps or do things other than school work. I would also love to see more study rooms and games/activities included around the floor. It would be great to have more outlets and chargers as well. Regretfully, Anonymous

Love Letter: Dear libraries, I am told that when we pass on, a piece of our soul remains here on Earth. I believe this. I’ve felt the souls of loved ones in the caress of the wind, seen them in the ember glow of a sunset. I’ve heard them in my mind when I visit you. You are a cemetery, a place where old ideas are laid to rest for eternity. You are most fertile, where new souls sprout, are cultivated, and grow. You are both the end and the beginning. You hold a million golden life stories as well as your own. Love, A soul in cultivation

Love Letter: Dear Library, Thank you for your solace during these cold winter months. I appreciate your constant embrace. Your warm temperature engulfs me each time I step through the library doors. You are always there for me especially at late night hours like during finals season. You give the best views and I admire your beauty always. 🌅📚✨With love, Grace

Love Letter: Dear Library, I am in my fourth year and while I barely went to you for studying (because it's always packed and I prefer resource centers better), I still think you are great. Recently, my friends and I go to study there a lot more often and it is one of the few times where we can all be together because of our crazy schedules. Thanks for always being in the center of campus and easy to find lol. Sincerely, Lorena

Break Up Letter: Dear Geisel, How can you do this to me? All the times that I spent in you. All the moments that we shared, day or night, and you have the audacity to cheat on me. You have too many people coming in and out other than me. And you tell me that you're always very busy. You barely even spend time with me anymore. Good bye. I don't wish the very best for you. From, Junghwan

Love Letter: I would like to say that I love the library especially the 8th floor and the 2nd floor. Especially the 2nd floor as they have overnight study. I love how there are printers available and the 8th floor chairs are really comfortable. Sincerely, Anonymous

Love Letter: Dear Library, thank you for providing a study spot for me when I have nowhere else to go and offering reliable(?) internet to do work. Sincerely, Anonymous

Love Letter: 24/7 Geisel, what else can I expect? A cozy home where I could always stay. Sleep and awake, Study and play, and I am all over you. Sincerely, Anonymous

Break Up Letter: Hi! I would love if you had sections like in the bookstores where they say up and coming fiction or romance so that students are more likely to checkout books! Regretfully, Anonymous

Love Letter: My dearest Geisel, We have been through so much together. From hard times, to the days that were easier, you have always been there to support me through it all. Look at how much we've grown! I am now about to graduate, and you are changing into a better, upgraded building. I just want to say that I am so proud of us <3 I feel lucky to have you by my side, and the impacts you have made on me will remain for a lifetime. Thank you for everything. Gratefully Yours, Knowledge Lover

Love Letter: Geisel 8th floor will you marry me right now?? Specifically the enclosed desk/chair combos that face outside the window. Those desks have ruined all the other floors for me. Sincerely, Anonymous

Love Letter: Ode to the 8th Floor / Midterm or paper, / I’m in you much later, / Than I would like to be, / But that’s not a problem, / Does not make solemn, / Because when I'm up there, / I get lost in a stare, / And my mind the view repairs, / A place so serene, / So quiet and clean, / When at the top, / I can hear a pin drop, / Not 1 2 3 4 5 6 or 7 / 8th is just heaven, / It is the floor, / I most adore Sincerely, Anonymous

Break Up Letter: Hello Library, Unfortunately our time together is coming to a close as I approach my last quarter here at UCSD. As always, I am in admiration of your beauty and can not thank you enough for giving me some of the most impactful memories any human being can have. But like so many things, our time cannot last forever. You are the very heart and sun of this place, and I am but a wayward comet, a star that can only hope to share some of your brilliance. You will be the place of comfort to many students like me, just as you have before and always will. I'm sure that there is no perfect version of either of us, and in many ways we will always be incomplete, but know that during our time together, there was a girl who dearly loved you, and she wouldn't have given you up for anything. Yours, forever and ever, Roxanne

Love Letter: My dearest love (aka Library), you have been a consistent and constant friend to me all these years. When I needed a place to study and focus, you were there. When I just needed to get out and take a walk, I could just chill in your front yard. When I felt peckish and needed a snack, you provided that too. When I felt overwhelmed by research needs, you provided aid through librarians! Thank you for being a constant figure for me. I love the view when I'm with you by the way! Sincerely, Anonymous

Love Letter: I love that there are rooms to reserve so that I know there's a place I can go to whenever I'm in need of a quiet study spot. However, the wifi sometimes has issues which has messed up some of my exams. So although the wifi makes my life difficult, I love that the Library has great places for me to go cry. Sincerely, Anonymous

Love Letter: Beloved Library, I write this letter to fill with my love and admiration for you. You are an establishment that gives me peace and tranquility like no other despite the chaos that goes on outside of your silent stories. Your books inspire a passion in me like no other. I can't get enough of your history and your wide variety of categories. Despite only knowing you for so little, it's like I've known you all my life, and I will not be able to function without you anymore. I can look at no other library the same anymore because you are my match. Not only have you inspired me but many others around your world because of your other-worldly architecture which was the model of the snow fortress in Christopher Nolan's Inception. Despite the construction in the lobby which causes me a great pain and sadness, it will not stop my undying affection for you. It will not stop me from seeing you, hence I'll go soon I promise. Sincerely, Your favorite admirer
